I entered Malawi from Mozambique and exited to Zambia, as follows:
- 29 April: From Mozambique through the Mandimba / Chiponde Border Posts, and
- 23 May: To Zambia through the Mchinji / Mwami Border Posts
I presented the carnet, which was duly accepted and correctly filled out and stamped, at both the entry and exit posts without any input from me.
Mandatory Third Party Insurance, at MWK 12 000-00, was available from a single vendor / company at the Chiponde border post, so I have no idea whether I paid a fair price or not. No other fees were levied.
I was asked only once during my stay, on the very first day in fact, to produce proof of Insurance.
PS. Mwendo is insured with OutSurance in South Africa. Comprehensive cover, i.e. including 3rd Party, extends to several countries in the region, including Malawi. I had obtained a letter, via e-mail, from OutSurance to this effect prior to my departure but did NOT have a printed copy when I reached the border, so I had to fork out the cash, just as I had to do in Mozambique several weeks earlier.
PPS. Don't rub it in- I know I had enough time to print it in Mozambique before going to Malawi!
