God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
~Reinhold Niebuhr (from The Serenity Prayer)

Aforika has come to an end.

I returned home, yet again, yesterday the 6th September, exactly 170 days after I first left home, this time "for keeps". Sadly, most of the last 70 days of this period was spent at home.

Details to follow...

The best-laid schemes o' Mice an' Men
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!
~Robert Burns (from To a Mouse)

What does one do when one's dream fades in the harsh light of reality?

I expected, and I was 'promised', many times, by many people, that this tour would afford me the opportunity to learn a few things about myself.

Visa Woes

Submitted by Cecil Hill on Fri, 2017/07/07 - 17:59

The Angolan Embassy in Pretoria today rejected my visa application, which I submitted  on Tue 27 June 2017, on the grounds that, not only should one lodge a visa application in one's home country, said application should be made in one's home city - Cape Town in my case. This despite a motivation letter, detailing how I came to be in Gauteng at this particular juncture, accompanying the application.

Dispatches from the front #10

I returned to Mzansi yesterday afternoon (Thu 15 Jun) via Beit Bridge, the only border post between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

I arrived in Johannesburg today, where I will stay with my youngest sister for (roughly) the next two weeks, while I go about applying for visas to Angola and the DRC, in order to proceed to and through West Africa. It is the policy of both these countries that one should apply for a visa in one's home country.

I will also use the opportunity to expose Mwendo to some professional care at one of the local Motorrad service centres.
